American University’s Office of Sustainability and the student group Ecosense are encouraging students on campus to stop consuming bottled water.

Office of Sustainability director, Chris O’Brien, says that tap water in the district meets all EPA standards. These results are publically available online, he says.

“Bottled water doesn’t meet EPA standards because it is not tested by the EPA. Bottled water is tested by the FDA because it is a food and beverage product.”

American University has already started switching larger, jug bottled coolers with ones that filter tap water.

With so many landmarks to see in Washington D.C. others get overshadowed.

Historical U street, birthplace of Duke Ellington and the home to many jazz legends, is an area rich in culture and history.

The best part of touring the area is the self-guided audio tour available for free. The tour plays right through your MP3 player and allows tourists to stop and break.

Stops along the way are Ben’s Chilli Bowl, the Lincoln Theater and the African-American civil war museum, where curator Hair Jones has been for years.

“It has brought a lot of people to this area especially on Saturday mornings and of course given the community a great deal of exposure.”

Free tour booklets are available at Ben’s chilli bowl and the tour can be downloaded on iTunes.

Thousands gathered in Washington’s Lafayette park to protest the administrations immigration and deportation laws.

The rally was planned for weeks, but drew a much larger crowd after a new Arizona anti-immigration law allows police to question any suspected illegal immigrants.

Illinois Congressman Luis Guiterrez was among 35 people arrested outside the white house for civil disobedience.

Ghanaian immigrant and Tennants and Workers united intern Margie Obeen says these laws affect all races.

“Not everyone that is an immigrant is a Hispanic person. People should not think that just because you are a certain stereotype that makes you an immigrant. We are all immigrants.”
